What we give

Every person included on a Lincoln Community Larder voucher is given sufficient food to last for 3 days.

A typical food parcel will include:

  • UHT milk
  • Breakfast cereal or porridge
  • Tinned fruit and rice pudding
  • Tinned vegetables
  • Pasta or rice
  • Pasta sauce
  • Fresh or frozen bread
  • Sunflower spread
  • Cheese
  • Tinned meats such as meatballs or stews
  • Soup
  • Tuna
  • Tea or coffee
  • Squash
  • Sugar
  • Baked Beans or tinned spaghetti
  • Fresh or tinned potatoes
  • Biscuits

We also try to include some fresh fruit and/or vegetables.

When donations of the above items are exhausted we buy them in from a supermarket, always using their basic ranges or special offers. Among our donations there are often some ‘luxury’ items such as cakes, puddings, ketchup, corned beef, tinned salmon that we will distribute whilst we have them. We also keep back suitable items to be given out just at Christmas time.

Who decides if a Larder Voucher is warranted?

At the Lincoln Community Larder we rely on the referring agency to determine whether the person is in genuine need. We don’t get involved in that side of things unless there are exceptional circumstances, eg when we spot someone who has gone straight from the Larder to the supermarket to purchase non essential items, such as alcohol. Then the referrer gets a phone call and we trust them to take the necessary steps.

There will always be people who will take advantage of us, just as there are people who will take advantage of anything that is on offer but that is a risk we have to take in order to reach the people who are in desperate need.
